Wasteland Workshop - Session 2 (Jan. 27, 2026)

Welcome back to the Wasteland

Wasteland Workshop session #2 took place on Tuesday as planned, and we made a lot of progress on our goals and armies. This week was still focused on miniature assembly and painting, but we also managed to obtain and cut the boards for our terrain project. We'll make more progress on that next week and post some work-in-progress of that.

The workspace itself evolved with the addition of some magnification lighting and other tweaks to our equipment as we make ourselves more at home in our space here. We've been working on our Boxking Kingswood 4'x6' gaming table (check them out on our Partners page), covered with a nice thick protective canvas. We do have a dedicated miniature table for one or two people, but larger groups are best on the large table.

Lon (@hobbyrealhard on Instagram) has been powering through his fully complete force of The Pack, and has included a full set of 3 X-01 Power Armor figures (they may not all be used by The Pack, but I'm sure they'll find their use in our games). He's at the tail end of the painting on all of these, and they are really beautiful. We spent a lot of time tweaking the metallics on the Power Armor and playing with technical paint on the bases. And the detail on The Pack raiders is outstanding, there are some more pics below.

I personally worked on a few elements of the forces - specifically the Super Mutants, an Operator Crew, and a Deathclaw I got started on. I was able to complete the core Super Mutant crew. They just need a new leader and maybe a couple of supporting models to complete out the crew for Factions gameplay. I tried a couple of different greens before settling on the one I have here.

After I completed those Mutants, I started working on priming and basecoating my Operators Crew. I used an airbrush to prime them, that's a first for me, but it worked well. Then I assembly line style tried to get through the basecoat for the skin, clothing, and basic leather on the models. Very early, but luckily Operators have a relatively uniform color scheme, especially for Raiders. We're generally sticking with canon color schemes for the Fallout figures.

Lastly I basecoated the Deathclaw figure that comes with the Wasteland Warfare starter set. We're not quite sure how he'll rear his ugly head in gameplay yet, but he is fun to paint. I was trying a more drybrush heavy technique for his main body, and then worked on the horns to try to give them that weathered wasteland look. Still early. I'm planning to try to drybrush some coppery metallic highlights on his dark brown scales... I noticed that in the latest episode of the TV show and thought it would look cool. We'll see.

Jess has been working on the Survivors, and wrapped up the initial Warfare starter set bunch including a Vault Dweller and Dogmeat. Now she's working on assembling and starting on some additional Survivors.

Overall we've made darn good progress for just two sessions - we've got functional Crews for The Pack, Operators, Super Mutants, and Survivors... that is a solid foundation for some gameplay and some epic terrain building.

That's what session 3 is going to focus on - terrain. We're starting with 2 boards, 3x3 (to meet Wasteland Warfare specs, and to be masked off for other games that use a 2x3 board). We're going to do one in a concrete base, and one in a sandy desert/wasteland base. We'll be able to use then generically for other games (ie Warhammer), but then we'll build modular pieces to theme it towards Fallout for our Warfare and Factions games.

We're excited to keep building. And we hope you'll join us next time. Session 3, February 3 at 6pm at Expedition Outpost - 8320 Louetta Rd Ste 190, Spring, TX 77379.
